Playland-at-the-beach

Playland-at-the-Beach is a place I so wish still existed in San Francisco. For years I’ve poured over old photographs of the amusement rides, the signs, the food, the people having fun. Many times I’ve walked along Ocean Beach, looking out at the rows of 80s condos that now line the highway where it once stood.

This series began with nostalgia for a place that is no longer here, looking back through rose-tinted glasses at the imagined magic of a place I’ve never been. I began collecting scratched up old sunglasses that would have otherwise been thrown away; using them as canvases and found photography as inspiration, I created miniature scenes of the imaginary place I long to step back into.

Beach trash series #1

Every plastic object found washed up on the beach holds its own story. Where did it begin? What journey did it take to arrive here? What role may you or I have played in that journey?

Each artwork in this series is created from an object of plastic trash found on Stinson Beach, CA. The object is preserved exactly as it was found, and I have added organic papercut elements inspired by local sea life to turn the sculptural plastic into a new form.

I hope to show these discarded objects in a different light and to gently invite thoughtful reflection on the plastic waste we generate and how we might create a different story.
